The below is a recent post by my friend and colleague Nessa Morgan at www.toplineresumes.com. She posts regularly about career advice and I have personally used her services for a great resume rewrite. I was inspired by her personal self-reflection here and in the blue boxes are my personal thoughts on her lessons. I’d love to see some of your reflections to add to the list in the comments below.
Here are a few things I’ve learned over the years and maybe you can use them to help propel yourself forward too:
|LESSON 1 // SUCCESS IS NOT AN ACCIDENT |
Probably one of the biggest lessons I’ve ever learned. If you want to be successful you have to do it on purpose. I’ve built two really successful businesses over the past few years and I’ve realized that the reason they became successful is that I was taking action to make them successful…EVERY DAY.
Placing your goals in the universe as a great friend says is very important. Set goals, write them down, tell everyone – then do it. I always ask – did you do YOUR part?
LESSON 2 // CONDITION YOURSELF FOR SUCCESS
Make a conscious effort to train your brain for success; which means focusing on the positives, rather than dwelling on the negatives. It means making the commitment to yourself to become the person you need to be in order to succeed.
I have studied presence theory and this is so important. If you let your mind wander it will. You will spend your time worrying about the what if vs the what is.
LESSON 3 // TUNE INTO YOURSELF
When we pay attention and listen to ourselves the most magical things can begin to happen. Deep down you know what you need to do, you know what the right thing to do is, so listen up. The more I stay aligned with myself the more I stay in the flow and manifest what I want. Things happen more easily.
Before you can transform others, you must transform yourself. Know who you are, what others think of you and keep a pulse on your feelings, emotions and mental state.
LESSON 4 // GET CLEAR ON WHAT YOU WANT AND FOLLOW THE FEELING
Don’t let your logical brain get in the way of a feeling or sense about something. If something fills you with joy and excitement but your logical brain tells you it’s not possible, don’t listen to your brain follow the feeling!
I was once told “take every opportunity regardless of how scary”. A quote from League of Legends Garen “Fear is the first of many foes”. Believe and achieve.
LESSON 5 // DON’T WORRY ABOUT NOT HAVING IT ALL FIGURED OUT… No one does!! Lean into knowing that you’ll never have all the answers and that’s ok!
Nobody is an expert in anything if we are truly evolving! Don’t seek to master, seek to add value to all you do. Lead your teams to grow and transform.
LESSON 6 // ADD VALUE
Add insane amounts of value all the time. To as many people as you can!
Make sure you can “see” your customer and develop a relationship with them that you get honest feedback about your value. Drive value vs. lower cost!
LESSON 7 // CREATE AMAZING EXPERIENCES
For yourself, your team, your followers, and people will love hanging out with you if you invite them into your experiences.
Experience for the customer and the employee. Too much focus on the customer vs. the employees. Happy, engaged employees will naturally produce happy customers!
LESSON 8 // GET CLEAR ON YOUR MISSION, YOUR WHY AND BUILD YOUR BRAND ON IT
It doesn’t have to be complicated – just get clarity and stay connected with your why, whether as a business owner or professional in a career.
Personal brand – your persona – know it, develop it and be true to it. I am a unique blend of business and tech, therefore my brand is Tech Pro Unicorn.
LESSON 9 // DON’T BE AFRAID TO BE YOU, BE AFRAID NOT TO BE YOU We live in a time where people can see when you’re not being yourself, even if it’s scary just find the courage to fully be yourself!
Always be true to you and you won’t get lost in who you told others you were. I am me…I have great qualities and yep I have faults. But while I adapt, I don’t change me.
LESSON 10 // BUILD YOUR LIST Like-minded people who resonate with your message and what you have to share. Don’t be afraid to share your message with the world because the right people will find you.
Find “your people” or another saying is “find your tribe and love them hard”. Get rid of the nay sayers, do a regular purge. Pull those who support you closer.
LESSON 11 // IT WILL TAKE LONGER THAN YOU THINK
No one has overnight success. Realizing it will take longer and just accepting it will help you relax and know that it’s a journey and you’ll get there 🙂
Give it up to Him and believe there is a plan. Do your part and stay engaged and positive. Negativity is your biggest enemy, look for a path that may be different than the past.
LESSON 12 // KEEP THE FAITH & TRUST THAT IT WILL WORK OUT
When you’re trying to turn your idea into a reality (including trying to find a new job) and doing things you have never done before you just have to dig deep a find that place of trust and faith that it will all work.
Never give up – steadily build towards your goals. Ask for help, have a plan that is achievable in small chunks and keep going. Track your progress.
LESSON 13 // NETWORK LIKE CRAZY
One of the most important things for building momentum in your business and career is networking. Just get out there!
People make the world go around. Many of us tech folks forget this and prefer computers and sterile interfaces – people will make the difference in your life.
LESSON 14 // LISTEN, LEARN & GROW
Always keep learning and growing. There is so much out there to learn, take the bits that resonate with you and always be open to learning.
Approach life with an inquisitive nature – learn constantly – news flash you are never the expert – build a better mouse trap. Listen more than you speak.
LESSON 15 // ACKNOWLEDGE YOUR ACHIEVEMENTS
This is so easy to forget to do, yet so important. Take a few minutes to reflect and think about all the things that you’ve achieved this year. Celebrate yourself!
Maybe it is chocolate or a diet cheat or a night out – celebrate the small wins and bring others along with you. You are unique and can be a Unicorn too!
LESSON 16 // BE GRATEFUL DAILY
Take a moment every day to be grateful for the gifts and people you have been blessed with.
Personally, I started a journal to help with this. Even someone who is down, unemployed, poor finds the gift of humility and always has friends who love them.
LESSON 17 // KNOW THAT CONFUSION IS PART OF THE JOURNEY
Everyone is confused. Even the most successful entrepreneurs and professionals feel confused sometimes, it’s okay! Take the pressure off yourself – you don’t have to be perfect.
I don’t understand many things – it drives me to get better. I may never master it but I will definitely learn more than I know about it today and provide value to my customer.
LESSON 18 // BE KIND & CARE MORE
It’s so easy to be kind and care for people. This is so powerful and easy to do because everyone one of us can be kind.
So little effort to be kind and care. Try it – pay for someone at the drive through – visit a senior – volunteer – offer a meal – celebrate friend’s special events – DO IT!
LESSON 19 // DON’T COMPARE YOURSELF TO ANYONE ELSE
Comparing will derail you from success! You’re not on the same journey as anyone else, so don’t compare yourself to someone else ever.
My kids do this – DON’T. You each have unique offerings and that diversity on a team is powerful assuming the leader can be aware and harness it.
LESSON 20 // BE CONSISTENT
Even when you don’t want to, just keep going and keep putting value and content out there consistently and it will pay off.
Create habits – habits towards your goals – it is all connected. Planning is a hard task and being stuck at this step until well defined is key in personal life and business.
LESSON 21 // ALLOW YOURSELF TO CHILL OUT & TAKE A BREAK
Things aren’t going to fall apart if you take a break! It’s important to chill out and put yourself first sometimes. Take a mini vacation. Don’t look for a job for ONE DAY or a WEEKEND. Our brain needs that break here and there.
Know what is your break – doesn’t have to be a $5,000 vacation, for me it is driving my car a long distance or chilling with my family. Take breaks – they lead to greatness.
LESSON 22 // HAVE PATIENCE
Things don’t happen overnight, they take time, and you have to learn to be okay with it. Question: What are your highs and lows from the past year? What have you learned from them? And how will you use what you’ve learned to move forward? Share in the comments below.
Virtues – those elusive things we all try to do better at. Slow down, listen….to your environment, your colleagues, your friends and Him. What are they telling you?
